Fire Prevention Week 2025: Charge into Fire Safety with Lithium-Ion Awareness
Every October, Fire Prevention Week reminds us of the importance of protecting our families, homes, and businesses from the dangers of fire.
This year, Fire Prevention Week runs from October 5–11, 2025, with the theme:
“Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home!”
Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere—powering our phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and more. While they’re efficient and convenient, improper use, charging, or storage can cause overheating and even fires.
At CLE Electric, we’ve seen how easily small electrical oversights can create serious hazards, which is why we’re committed to spreading awareness during Fire Prevention Week and beyond.
Why Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Matters
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has identified lithium-ion batteries as a growing cause of residential and workplace fires. These batteries pack a lot of energy in a small package, and when damaged, misused, or charged improperly, they can overheat, ignite, or even explode.
Raising awareness this Fire Prevention Week is about helping families and businesses understand how to safely use and store the tools and devices they rely on every day.
Lithium-Ion Safety Tips from CLE Electric
Based on our work serving Northeast Ohio’s residential and commercial clients, here are some ways to stay safe when using lithium-ion batteries:
Use the Right Charger
Always use the manufacturer’s recommended charging equipment. Off-brand chargers can cause overcharging or overheating.Charge in Safe Locations
Avoid charging batteries overnight or when you’re not at home. Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces—never on beds, couches, or near flammable materials.Store Batteries Properly
Keep spare batteries in cool, dry places, and avoid direct sunlight. Never store them in extreme heat (like in a car).Replace Damaged Batteries
If you notice swelling, leaking, or overheating, stop using the battery immediately and dispose of it safely at an authorized recycling location.Avoid Overloading Outlets
Charging multiple devices at once can stress electrical outlets. Spread devices across circuits or consider adding professionally installed outlets.Don’t Modify Batteries or Devices
Tampering with or trying to repair batteries can be extremely dangerous. Always use products as intended.
